A Wood-Burning Stove

Image
A wood-burning stove is simply one of the oldest and most efficient ways to heat your office or home and bring a certain amount of style to your interior design. Wood, as a fuel, fell into decline in the 40's and 50's due to the rise in popularity of inexpensive electricity, gas and oil to heat our homes. But due to a burgeoning awareness of climate change and its effect on the environment, and the rising costs of other types of heating fuels which were becoming a serious financial consideration in many households, many people were returning to wood logs as a means of heating their homes. Today’s wood burning stoves are much more efficient than the models of yesteryear and much better looking. Nearly all have a place in any interior design layout of your home or office. The main advantage of the wood burner, over other types of heating, is that the fuel costs are relatively stable and are quite inexpensive, wood fuel is a lot less expensive than electricity, gas and oil, a...

Choosing Your Stove

Image
How to Choose the Right Size Wood Burning Stove? When choosing the size of wood burner that will best suit your needs you should consider much more than just the size of the room. Your window areas, the insulation and your local climate will also play an important role in how well your room will be heated. When you are using stove-heat output calculators, make sure that they include the insulation factor as well. We strongly recommended you avoid the temptation to buy a larger stove because you will not be able to operate it efficiently for both energy and cost. Also, keep in mind that the logs you burn will make a big difference in both heat output and cost efficiency of the stove. We recommended you only burn fully seasoned hardwood logs. What is an ‘Exempt’ Wood Burning Stove? If you live in a "Smoke Control Area", we recommend you look for an ‘exempt’ wood burning stove. ‘Exempt’ refers to the DEFRA ‘authorised’ stoves that have been tested and approved for Smo...

5 good reasons to buy a stove in the Summer

Image
1. Excellent availability of all stoves including popular models like both types of Carron stoves. Even some Scandinavian stoves that can take 3 to 4 weeks to order could still be fitted before the start of the heating season. So no need to compromise on stove choice or colour. 2. Excellent availability of installation slots. With the best will in the world, come mid-September through to Christmas, slots just disappear fast. The reality is that if you can get an installer to fit a stove quickly in the middle of the heating season then they're probably not very experienced or very good (or possibly not even Hetas registered). Good installers, like good brickies or joiners, are hard to come by. But we will always do our best to get your stove fitted before you need it for the winter season. 3. Excellent availability of chimney sweeps. We can always put you in touch with local sweeps, or should you be feeling a little adventurous you can buy the rods and brushes and do it yourself. ...

The Art of Fire

Image
When I was a lad growing up my Nan had the art of fire to more of a science really and if my Gramp hadn't got everything exactly right for her she would have a somewhat less than favourable opinion on the matter.  Let's leave the actual fire out of it for a moment while I explain the system. This was some fifty years ago, or more, and things were a little more rudimentary in the home back then and electrical sockets were more like one Bakelite 15 amp socket and whatever your kitchen appliances needs had to be met from a birds nest of cables and adapters that came from them or out of the light switch which had a similar birds nest. This was no problem as the electrical needs were simple and health and safety had yet to be invented. But the reliance on wood or coal fires for heat and paraffin oil for the lighting was extensive. In the kitchen was the forerunner of the Rayburn, the range which was the focus of the kitchen/parlour but the manufacturer escapes me. This provi...

Pizza Round the Woodburner

Image
Proper Wood Fired Pizza I know it is summer and the thoughts of cold winter nights and warm food by the warm hearth are far from your minds right now, but trust me, you'll thank me eventually. If you have ever been to an authentic Italian restaurant anywhere, even better if it was in Italy somewhere, and ordered an authentic wood-fired pizza you will understand why the Italians are so passionate about them and frankly nothing will ever again be good enough. The taste is as different as it can get from what you can pick up in the frozen aisle of Tesco's So you sit there, with the wind howling outside and the rain hitting the windows with a force that you just know would sting your face if you had to go out in it that evening. Then some bright spark suggests a pizza and a bottle of wine by the wood burner would be a good idea for dinner tonight. It is amazing how a cold winter evening can be the mother of all invention when it comes to not having to go out again and gettin...
