How to Choose the Right Size Wood Burning Stove?

When choosing the size of wood burner that will best suit your needs you should consider much more than just the size of the room. Your window areas, the insulation and your local climate will also play an important role in how well your room will be heated. When you are using stove-heat output calculators, make sure that they include the insulation factor as well. We strongly recommended you avoid the temptation to buy a larger stove because you will not be able to operate it efficiently for both energy and cost. Also, keep in mind that the logs you burn will make a big difference in both heat output and cost efficiency of the stove. We recommended you only burn fully seasoned hardwood logs.

What is an ‘Exempt’ Wood Burning Stove?

If you live in a "Smoke Control Area", we recommend you look for an ‘exempt’ wood burning stove. ‘Exempt’ refers to the DEFRA ‘authorised’ stoves that have been tested and approved for Smoke Control Areas. You can find ‘exempt’ stoves on the DEFRA website or ask us for advice in the selection of an appropriate stove. It is most important you keep in mind that within Smoke Control Area, you are not allowed to use any smoke producing appliances including wood burning stoves with the exception of those that are determined by the DEFRA as ‘exempt’.

How Much Money Could I Hope to Save with a Wood Burning Stove?

When I was a lad growing up my Nan had the art of fire to more of a science really and if my Gramp hadn't got everything exactly right for her she would have a somewhat less than favourable opinion on the matter.  Let's leave the actual fire out of it for a moment while I explain the system.
